Kind vs. Nice — Take Care of You First
At TCoU — Take Care of You, we believe in something very simple but powerful:
"Being nice isn’t the same as being kind."
Nice is about pleasing others and keeping things comfortable and at peace.
Kindness is about caring and helping generate what’s right, without taking away from what you need.
And the difference? It starts with how you take care and respect yourself.
What “Nice” Looks Like
Nice often comes from a good place… but forgets you in the process.
- Saying yes when you’re already stretched thin
- Avoiding a hard conversation to “keep the peace”
- Smiling through something that doesn’t sit right
Nice protects the moment.
But it can cost you your energy, your voice, and your boundaries.
What “Kind” Looks Like
Kindness includes you.
- Saying no with respect and clarity
- Having honest conversations, even when they’re uncomfortable
- Giving feedback that helps someone grow
- Choosing truth and compassion at the same time
Kindness protects what matters — including yourself.
One of TCoU's mottos is:
"Taking care of yourself is not selfish".
It’s the foundation of how you show up for everything and everyone else.
Nice = seeks approval--pleasing others.
Kind = is caring, and it's focused on building trust.
Here is a quick check for yourself when you are confronted with a choice between being nice and being kind.
Before you respond, pause:
Am I doing this to keep things easy; to keep peace (no confrontation), does it take away from my own peace…?
Or am I doing this because I care about the outcome of this issue and it’s truly the right thing to do, without abusing my peace...?
Final Thought
You don’t have to choose between being a good person and being real.
At TCoU, we believe the strongest version of you is both.
Take care of you — and you’ll naturally take care of what matters most.
