AI vs U&I -- The Politeness Paradox
Why is it that we often speak more politely to devices than to the people we work or live with? The cartoons highlight that contrast: courteous phrasing with a digital assistant, then abrupt, transactional language with a co-worker or spouse.
Why it happens
- Machines are simple: No emotions, no expectations, no friction.
- People are complex: Collaboration requires patience, clarity, and consideration.
- Habits take over: Efficiency can unintentionally replace courtesy.
Why it matters
Small communication cues shape workplace culture and our living environment. A little politeness strengthens trust, reduces tension, and improves how others around us function and react to us.
Takeaway
If we can be polite to a machine, we can certainly extend the same respect and effort to the interactions with people we rely on every day.
